Biografie

Wieland Kuijken werd geboren in 1938 te Dilbeek. Hij studeerde cello en piano aan het stedelijk conservatorium te Brugge en behaalde een eerste prijs cello aan het Koninklijk Conservatorium te Brussel.
Naast zijn klassieke studies interesseerde hij zich reeds als 18-jarige aan de viola da gamba en leerde dit instrument als autodidact bespelen.
Zijn carrière startte met het Alarius ensemble dat actief was tussen 1959 en 1972. Gelijktijdig maakte hij deel uit van het Ensemble Musiques Nouvelles dat overal in Europa hedendaagse muziek uitvoerde.
Zijn internationale carrière werd verder uitgebouwd met zijn 2 broers Sigiswald en Barthold in samenwerking met Gustav Leonhardt, Frans Brüggen, Alfred Deller, Robert Kohnen en andere iconen van de authentieke beweging.
Vanaf 1971 doceerde hij gamba aan de conservatoria te Brussel en Den haag en maakte hij deel uit van ontelbare jury's van internationale wedstrijden oude muziek als daar zijn te Brugge, Parijs, Boston en Utrecht.
Hij was medestichter van La Petite Bande en is sinds 1987 cellist van het Kuijken kwartet.
