Biografie

François Glorieux werd geboren te Kortrijk in 1932. Hij is concertpianist, componist, dirigent en pedagoog. Als enthousiaste muzikale duizendpoot is hij thuis in vele muziekwerelden: de klassieke muziek, improvisatie, expressionisme, popmuziek, wereldmuziek en jazz.

Al van jongs af aan improviseerde Glorieux aan de piano en maakte hij zijn eerste compositiestukken. Op zeventienjarige leeftijd zette hij zijn muzikale studie verder aan het Conservatorium van Gent bij pianist Marcel Gazelle en componist George Lonque. Al snel verwierf hij als pianist bekendheid op zowel nationale als internationale podia en werd hij geroemd om zijn virtuositeit en talent voor improvisatie. Een belangrijke ontmoeting voor Glorieux was die met dirigent André Cluytens, met wie hij talrijke keren samenwerkte als solist pianist en componist.

Glorieux reisde de wereld rond als componist, concertpianist, dirigent en pedagoog. Hij werkte samen met talrijke gerenommeerde choreografen en dansgezelschappen, zoals Maurice Béjart, André Leclair, Valery Panov, Monette Loza, het ‘Ballet van de XXste Eeuw’, het ‘Koninklijk Ballet van Vlaanderen’ (nu ‘Opera Ballet Vlaanderen), het ‘Nederlands Danstheater’ en het ‘Nationaal Ballet’ in Amsterdam. Hij dirigeerde onder meer de ‘Stan Kenton Band’ in de Verenigde Staten, het ‘BBC Radio Orchestra’, ‘Kiev Chamber Orchestra’, ‘Mainzer Kammerochester’ en ‘Brussels Philharmonic Orchestra’. Zelf richtte Glorieux vier ensembles op: ‘Instrumentarium’, ‘Panoramic Trio’, ‘Brass and Percussion Orchestra’ en ‘Revivat Scaldis Chamber Orchestra’. Als ereprofessor kamermuziek aan het Koninklijk Conservatorium van Gent, eredocent aan het Kortrijkse Conservatorium, een kort gastprofessorschap aan Yale University en talrijke schoolconcerten in België, Duitsland, de VS, Zuid-Amerika, Canada en Japan, stak hij de jongere generaties aan met zijn enthousiasme voor de muziek in al zijn genres. In 1972 werd hij ook directeur van de ‘International Piano Master Class’ in Antwerpen.

Sinds 2015 mag Glorieux zich ridder noemen voor zijn verdiensten in de muziek. In 2012 werd hem door de Europese commissie de prijs ‘Give soul to Europe’ uitgereikt. Hij is ereburger van Kotrijk, Zoersel en Stabroek, mocht in 1985 de Lieven Gevaert Prijs in ontvangst nemen en behaalde goud in Japan met zijn plaat ‘François Glorieux plays the Beatles (Victor Musical Industries, inc.)’.
