Het libretto dat Barthold Brockes op basis van het passieverhaal schreef, was in de vroege achttiende eeuw zo immens populair, dat het niet minder dan twaalf componisten inspireerde tot een muzikale omzetting. De versie van Telemann was zo geliefd, dat Johann Sebastian Bach himself er een eigenhandig geschreven afschrift van maakte, omdat hij zich het werk helemaal eigen wenste te maken. Telemanns muziek is buitengewoon beeldend en rijk: in zijn handen wordt het bekende lijdensverhaal tot een sterk emotioneel geladen zielenreis, vol bespiegelingen en reacties op wat er verteld wordt. René Jacobs omringde zich voor zijn opname van dit meesterwerk met een indrukwekkende schare specialisten: het RIAS Kammerchor zingt schitterend gedetailleerd, de Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin haalt werkelijk alles uit de partituur wat erin zit en de solisten zijn stuk voor stuk perfect gecast. Bovendien verpakte Harmonia Mundi alles op luxueuze wijze, zodat deze box simpelweg een must-have is voor alle liefhebbers van goede muziek.

Nothing drew the crowds in early 18th-century Germany quite like Barthold Brockes' gruesome retelling of Christ's Trial and Crucifixion. Telemann's musical setting highlights the drama with brilliant orchestral touches. Throughout, the orchestral playing is amazingly vivid and Birgitte Christensen as Mary is thrilling. Dramatic though it is, this performance didn't persuade me that Telemann's Passion is on Bach's level. But then what performance could?

This ensemble, its members still in their 20s and just a dozen beautifully blended voices singing a cappella, has emerged as one of the best and freshest early music choirs around. Their third CD is a selection of motet and plainchant settings from the Song of Songs, the startling Old Testament collection of erotic love poems ascribed to King Solomon. Less familiar composers - Lhéritier, Francisco Guerrero, Vivanco - are included alongside Lassus, Gombert and Victoria. Palestrina's flowing lines in "Nigra sum" ("I am black but beautiful") and "Osculetur me" ("Let him kiss me") blur the boundaries of sacred and profane to sumptuous effect.

As mentioned, the performers are all excellent--not always the case in productions involving so many performers (six vocal soloists, various instrumental soloists, chorus, orchestra) and of this length (two hours and 20 minutes). But then, there is no finer or more experienced chorus, orchestra, and conductor in baroque repertoire than we have here, and together they and the well-chosen soloists have taken a neglected masterpiece and created another--a standard-setting performance that not only provides substantial listening pleasure but commands renewed respect for Telemann's stature as a composer of both church music and musical drama. The vibrant sound and ideally situated listening perspective, along with the superb notes and elegant packaging complete an essential--and thoroughly enlightening--release for all fans of baroque music.
