This new recording of Mahler's Des Knaben Wunderhorn is exemplary on several plains. The pairing of baritone Dietrich Henschel and soprano Sarah Connolly provides a delicious interplay between the songs' youthful directness and tender delicacy. Henschel himself captures the grotesque irony of the opening Revelge with alarming abandon. There's plenty magic, too, thanks to conductor Philippe Herreweghe, who elicits a truly electrifying clarity from the Orchestre des Champs-Élysees's playing.

Connolly’s beautiful low liquid mezzo has a dark beauty that heightens the tragic element in the folk poetry. Fragile longing colours the weightless waltz of Verlorene Mühe, a tremulous sob haunts Irdisches Leben, while a ghostly lightness drives the Bach-like melismas of Wer hat dies Liedlein Erdacht.
The period instruments are surprisingly diffuse, the clarinets milky, the oboe lacking bite and the solemn harp in Schildwache hidden by the strings.
