Perscommentaren

The two new versions are nicely contrasted. Charles Mackerras uses the modern instruments of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, though typically adding period performance touches where appropriate, while René Jacobs conducts the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra, one of Europe's top period-instrument bands.
Both recordings were made following concert performances but the Harmonia Mundi has far more sense of dramatic immediacy. There's urgency from the very start with Jacobs, who runs his highly strung account of the overture straight into the first recitative and never allows the tension to drop after that.
Anyone who has admired Mackerras's earlier Mozart opera recordings with the SCO won't be disappointed with this one, but Jacobs's set is a class apart.
(Andrew Clements, The Guardian, 31.03.2006)

(Marijke Schouten, Luister, juni 2006 p. 50)

Mackerras and Jacobs both provide fresh impetus to the least-regarded opera of Mozart's maturity. If one must choose between them, the veteran pays richer dividends than the maverick.
(David Vickers, The Gramophone, juni 2006 p. 89)

Een 9 van Crescendo
Nous retrouvons ici les qualités d'imagination, de soin et d'intelligence dont cet excellent chef a toujours fait preuve; attention permanente aux chanteurs, très large palette de couleurs orchestrales, énergie de chaque instant...
(Claude Jottrand, Crescendo nr.82 mei-juni 2006, p. 54)

*****
"Totally indispensable for the complete Mozartian!"
Jacobs’ performance is a tremendous success, bringing out the revolutionary Mozart as much as it does the evolutionary. Working with a fabulous cast including. Bernarda Fink as an ideal Sesto, Mark Padmore as a dazzling Tito,
Marie-Claude Chappuis and Sunhae Im as a delectably adorable young couple, and Alexandrina Pendatchanska as a majestically imperious and totally human Servilia, Jacobs takes no prisoners with this performance." (Laurence Vittes, AUDIOPHILE AUDITION 27.07.2006)

…Jacobs heeft hier niet de grootste stemmen verzameld, maar het is bijzonder hoe hij een hecht ensemble heeft weten te smeden, met solisten die stilistisch precies in zijn eigengereide opvatting passen.
(Willem Bruls, De Standaard, 12.08.2006)

The Best Discs of 2006
“Of the many Mozart anniversary releases, René Jacobs’s recording of La Clemenza di Tito (HMC80/901923/24) was outstanding, with a lyritcal Tito from Mark Padmore and incisive playing from the Freiburger Barockorchester…
(Anna Picard, The Independent on Sunday, 31.12.2006)

****
Jacobs' Clemenza is for me a paradigmatic example of a performance that thrilled by way of its vivd immediacy on first hearing..
(Brian Robbins, Goldberg nr. 52, p. 63)

René Jacobs vindicates his inclusion of every single bar, and goads his cast to performances of thrilling energy and commitment…it is Vitelia who steals the show. With her darkly flaring tone and formidable chest register, Bulgarian soprano Alexandrina Pendatchanska creates an unforgettable portrait.
(Richard Wigmore, The Classic Collection, Daily Telegraph, 22 November 2008)

Winner of th Gramophone Collection 2010
Purists may throw up their hands. But this is a performance of unrivalled colour and theatreical immediacy, not least in the crackling, fortepiano-embellished recitatives. The superb cast, led by Alexandrina Pendatchanska's sexy, venomous, thrillingly sung Vitellia, is matched in intensity and eloquency by the orchestra.
(Gramophone nr. 1062, october 2010, p. 65)
